best quotes ever
“The truth is like light, it will always come out. It will always find a way to leak from the darkness. ”
– Personal journal entry from a family member.

“Surround yourself with people whose eyes light up when they see you coming,” he says. “Slowly is the fastest way to get to where you want to be; the top of one mountain is the bottom of the next, so keep climbing.” – André De Shields said this at his Tony acceptance speech. I love this quote because it reminds me to slow down and that we don’t have to be in such a rush all the time. It’s easy to forget.

Isabelle Mercier did a TEDx called The Power of Zero Tolerance. There is some incredibly profound statements made in this video, here are a couple of my favorites: “If you can’t say no to what you don’t want, you’ll never have the time or energy to say yes to what you do want.” Another good one: “40 percent of what we actually worry about, never happens. That’s like putting 40% down on a home you may never get.” See what I mean? I love it when people can string thoughts together into a sentence that makes sense in a way that can resonate deeply. quotes about life
“It is the hardest thing you will ever have to do, and it will also be the most important: stop giving your love to those who aren’t ready to love you. Stop having hard conversations with people who don’t want to change. Stop showing up for people who are indifferent about your presence. Stop prioritizing people who make you an option. Stop loving people who aren’t ready to love you.” – Brianna Wiest

Oddly enough, the quote above gets most often attributed to Anthony Hopkins for some reason; however, this is the genius of Brianna Weist, a writer for Thought Catalog. It’s a funny thing, getting to know yourself. In the past, moments would arise where I felt that I needed to explain myself. Since I was coming from a place of pride in finally being able to articulate who I am and what I stand for, I was too eager to have those hard conversations and didn’t stop to think if I should be having them at all. Brianna has and continues to inspire my growth and I highly recommend reading some of her work. The article in particular that is quoted above is a revelation, you can read the whole article here.

“Allow your healing process to flow at the organic pace it deserves. You cannot rush or expect to be over pain instantly, it takes time. Be patient with yourself and trust that it will get better.” – Sylvester McNutt

“I don’t want to be a girl boss, I don’t want to hustle. I simply want to live my life slowly and lay down in a bed of moss with my lover and enjoy the rest of my existence reading books, creating art and loving myself and the people in my life.” Unknown audio from Instagram

“I know who I am. I love who I am. I like what I do. And I like how I do it. And I like my mistakes. And I like the way I learn. And I like the pace, with which I learn my mistakes. I don’t want to be anybody else, but me. By knowing this, I want to continue to figuring out who the fuck I am. That’s it.” – Zoe Saldana Actress

“If you’re not in my life anymore it doesn’t mean that I think that you’re a bad person. Like I don’t deem people good or bad. I deem them safe or unsafe. Aligned or misaligned. Because I’m not available for people that I have to protect myself from.” – Original Audio Instagram @iamketamusik

“It would be a terrible mistake to go through life thinking that people are the sum total of what you see.”
― Jonathan Tropper, This is Where I Leave You movie script

One of my favorite commencement speeches was done by Jim Carrey. It was my first look into him and there are so many nuggets of knowledge to pluck out. Here are a few of the ones that made it into my journal:

“Beware the unloved, for they will eventually hurt themselves or me.”

“You could spend your whole life imaging ghosts, [or] worrying about the pathway to the future but all there will ever be is what’s happening here. And the decisions we make in this moment, which are based in either love or fear. So many of us choose our path out of fear, disguised as practicality. What we really want seems impossibly out of reach and ridiculous to expect so we never dare to ask the Universe for it. I’m saying, I’m the proof that you can ask the Universe for it. Please. And if it doesn’t happen right away, it is only because the Universe is so busy fulfilling MY order.”

“My father could have been a great comedian but he didn’t believe that was possible for him and so he made a conservative choice. Instead, he got a safe job as an accountant. And when I was 12 years old he was let go from that safe job and our family had to do whatever we could to survive. I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which is that you can fail at what you don’t want. So you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.”

“Remember this: We have only two jobs on this Earth. The first: to learn. The second: to cope. We all find ways to soften the edges. Some edges need more softening than others. ::cheers: To finding something worth learning, and to coping with it.” – Shamelsss TV Script

“You don’t trust that someone’s never going to betray you. You just trust that you’ll be able to handle it if they do. That you’ll be able to walk away. That’s a massive key to it. Stop worrying about rather you can trust someone else. Maybe you can’t? We don’t know that. Only time will tell if you can trust someone else. That is a pointless waste of your energy to worry about. Worry only about yourself.” – Matthew Hussey (His podcast also has some amazing and inspiring content. Check out his YouTube Channel: Matthew Hussey)

“I’ve spent my life trying to make things simpler. Because I find ultimately that complicated doesn’t reach the heart.” – Hans Zimmer

“Books are the treasured wealth of the world and the fit inheritance of generations and nations.” – Henry David Thoreau (read more about how Thoreau has changed my life here.)

“The thing that hasn’t changed, and I don’t think will ever change, is that the operative word in music is “play.” You have to have a playfulness about it. As the world shifts, it’s starting to understand more and more that to have a playfulness about any and everything is actually the way of having a better life, or being more creative, or being more productive.” – Hans Zimmer

If you haven’t seen the movie Midnight in Paris, I suggest watching it. I believe it’s on Netflix right now. It’s all character driven and the dialogue is fantastic! It’s charming, funny, deep and a little fantastical. “I believe that love that is true and real, creates a respite from death. All cowardice comes from not loving or not loving well, which is the same thing. And then the man who is brave and true looks death squarely in the face, like some rhino-hunters I know or Belmonte, who is truly brave… It is because they make love with sufficient passion, to push death out of their minds… until it returns, as it does, to all men… and then you must make really good love again.” – Ernest from Midnight in Paris movie dialogue.

“I lied and said I was busy. I was busy, but not in the way most people understand. I was busy taking deeper breaths. I was busy silencing irrational thoughts. I was busy calming a racing heart. I was busy telling myself I AM OKAY. Sometimes this is my busy. And I will not apologize for it.: – Original Audio Instagram @christi.stey

“You’re not all going to like this but your mental health is more important than your career. Than money. Other people’s opinions. That event that you said you’d go to. Your family’s moods and wishes. If taking care of yourself means letting someone down, then LET THEM DOWN.” – Original Audio Instagram @nadiajaftha
